‘I mostly work sculpturally, but also use photography and video within my practice. I currently make sculptures and installations, which are made using a variety of mediums and through augmenting found objects. I would like my work to tap into the common mutual experiences of everyday life. A lot of my work revolves around the theme of home. I have always felt a great sense of connection to home and the houses I have spent time in, and this continues to have a big influence on my art. This shared experience is leading to connecting with viewers regarding their own experience of dwellings. I also want to convey the sense of familiarity, comfort and security a home can provide.
My current practice is focused on using doors as a theme. I have found it very interesting to work with doors as objects and I use them to explore various ways in which they can be placed or manipulated to give different outcomes. This has involved thinking about how a door – which is an everyday object familiar to everyone – can be understood in certain ways to create a variety of visual experiences and illusions. I enjoy working with illusion and playing with how the viewer may expect to see something within the work, but then it turns out to be something unexpected.
With my newest works, making the familiarity of doors seem unfamiliar is one of the main themes. It is important that when someone views the work, they can attribute their own narratives to the piece in the hope of engaging them with what they are looking at. In this way I hope my work is inclusive and people can easily relate and connect with it.’
