1. What is your typical studio routine?
My studio routine generally consists of me concentrating heavily on the sculptural aspects of my practice, where I experiment working with numerous materials and arrangements. I think that having shops like Wyse Byse and the Range nearby are very helpful as if I need to stock up on hardware supplies I’m able to source these easily. As a result, I often duck out to pick up supplies when I have flashes of ideas or ways to approach difficult assembly methods.
2. There are many arts journals, which would you consult regularly?
The only arts journal that I regularly read would be “Art Monthly”, which has great articles on contemporary art practice and reviews on exhibitions. Otherwise, I often read blogs such as “Xenogothic” and the E-Flux online journal.
3. What role does social media play in the documentation/promotion of your own work?
I primarily use Instagram if I’m posting documentation of my work, which I have a bit of a “love/hate” relationship with to be honest. It’s really cool to be able to see other artist’s work and a bit of an insight into their practice. I’ve actually gotten to know artists personally through Instagram, however I can’t help but feel that it can be a bit of a “dumping ground” for some things and creates a bit of dissonance. There’s a bit of an unconscious pressure sometimes that comes with it to seem that you’re being “productive”. However, it is really handy to also see what events are happening and acts as a good source to see things develop globally.
4. Have you completed any artist residencies or are there any you aspire to?
I was actually in Tokyo, Japan, on residency earlier this year, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete it due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. I’m hoping to return to complete it when the chance to do so arises, wheneverthis might be. Needless to say Tokyo was a great city to work in and explore. For the short time that I was there it definitely left an impression on me and has provided me with loads of ideas!
5. Can you name some of the contemporary artists you are interested in?
Too many to name! But to narrow it to a few artists that I’m interested in it would probably be Ben Drew, Holly Hendry, and collectives like Pil & Galia and Plastique Fantastique.
About the Artist
Gerard Carson’s practice is concerned with the contingency of matter in the context of accelerated modes of technological production, ecological breakdown, and the indeterminate vectors of their effects. His works take the form of precarious assemblages comprised of bio-plastics and concrete, where computer modelling and 3D printers act as techno-symbiotic agents in the assemblage’s manifestation.
