‘Four Female Painters’ is an ambitious exhibition showcasing a group of emerging female artists based in Belfast and London. Their various styles and interpretations of figurative and portraiture works combine to promote dialogue around the historic, and contemporary portrayal of the female form. The exhibition highlights this shared motivation and is timed to coincide with this year’s International Woman’s Day 2020.
“I am Generation Equality: Realising Women’s Rights” (08.03.2020)
Alana Barton is a visual artist based in Belfast. Staged within a created reality her oil paintings explore childhood, family relationships, and the speculative relationship between what is real and what is imaginary.
Amy Higgins creates large-scale paintings which reference space and the act of looking. Theories around the human condition and the “monstrous feminine” are consistent throughout this body of work. Higgins will show a combination of archive and new work in order to evidence colour and technique development.
Rachel Lawell’s practice is highly influenced by the portrayal of the female form in cinema, creating a clear interstice between film and painting. Viewed through the theoretical lens of the ‘male gaze’, her work challenges the viewer to consider the existence of the female form within each artwork.
Sonia Wynn explores themes around the feminine and selfhood in narrative painting, working mainly from memory and collected imagery of the body. Currently based in London, she balances topics that can be uncomfortable with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, which is often reflected in the works titles and is visible in the duality of meaning in the work.
